Saladin: · Kurdish Muslim · sultan (ruler) of Syria and Egypt


Where:

· third crusade took place at the Holy Land (Jerusalem)

· Jerusalem is located in the Judean Mountains, in between the medditerranean sea & the dead sea

When:

· Born 1138 (tikrit, Iraq)

· 1152-1174 Saladin escalates in power until the Syrian ruler (Nureddin) dies, then Saladin declared himself ruler.

· 1187 – conquers Jerusalem

· 1192 peace treaty with Richard the Lionhearted (one leader of the Christians in the third crusade) enacted – Muslim’s could keep the holy land, but Christians could not be persecuted on their pilgrimages.

· died 3-4-1193 due to illness

Facts

  • When Richard the Lionhearted and his army were suffering from starvation and dehydration, Saladin sent them fresh fruit and snow to help them recover (Saladin was a strict Muslim, and always helped the suffering)
  • Two attempts were made on his life, the assassins were never caught
  • Again, Saladin helped his opponent Richard the Lionhearted by sending his own personal physician to attend to Richard when he was wounded in battle.
  • Nurredin ( former sultan or Egypt & Syria) was planning to campaign against Saladin who was gaining too much power, nurredin died before the campaign.
